History

Masquerade Company's origins lie with a successful Dance and Drama School started in 1961 and was primarily involved in Charity shows for Cancer Research and funds for local Primary Schools.

Masquerade Theatre Company was founded in 1992 by Martin and Beryl Cooper. They met at a local theatre company and decided to create a new Musical Theatre Company which would aim to produce, to a professional standard, West End musicals at the Hexagon in Reading and the Kenton Theatre in Henley-on-Thames.  Beryl Cooper continues to teach her dance classes which began in 1961.

The Theatre School was introduced in 1994 for young people between the ages of 6 and 18, following the success of the addition of children performing in the Masquerade shows such as The King and I, Sound of Music, Oliver , Annie and Wizard of Oz.

In 2011 under the umbrella of Masquerade Theatre Company, the first Youth Production - Les Miserables was performed followed by Jesus Christ Superstar in 2012. Both shows were staged at the Kenton Theatre and we were joined by musical directors from the West End.

The Youth productions were a great success and Masquerade Youth Theatre Group was started in 2013.  We hold open auditions and anyone is able to come along and join any show.

In recogniton of Martin's creative work with young people, Reading Borough Council have recently named a road - Martin Cooper Close in Caversham Reading after him.
